  4.     Before Congressman Gus Savage embarked on an official trip to
  5. China in 1986, a House staffer asked his top aide what the Illinois
  6. Democrat wanted to explore during the ten-day stay. "Tailored
  7. clothing," she replied. What she meant was custom-made suits.
  8. Savage not only gave short shrift to the official meetings that
  9. were the ostensible purpose of his tour, but also cut short his
  10. visit so he could devote three days to sightseeing and fittings in
  11. Hong Kong and Seoul. Total cost of the 16-day junket, which also
  12. included Japan: $6,731, presumably not including his haberdashery
  13. bill.

  15.     The suit pursuit came to light when the State Department,
  16. alarmed by reports that the five-term Congressman had sexually
  17. accosted a Peace Corps volunteer during a fact-finding mission to
  18. Zaire last March, asked other embassies that have played host to
  19. Savage about his activities. Two congressional committees are now
  20. investigating the allegations. Considering the outcome of his
  21. foreign forays, Savage might want to consider sticking closer to
  22. home.
